Rare white humpback whale sighting in Queensland

Rare Humpback whale spotted in the coast of Queensland

Rare Humpback whale spotted in the coast of Queensland

A rare Humpback whale has been spotted off the coast in Queensland on Sunday evening and Australia’s whale watchers were hopeful that it is the famous Migaloo.

Migaloo is a large white humpback whale, on the first sighting on 28th June 1991 of this magnificent whale, he was the only known white whale in the world.  It is believed he was born in 1986, and is an albino or ‘hypo-pigmented’ humpback because of his unusual colouring. With a length of around 30m long and a weight ranging between 25-40 tons. His name derived from the indigenous word for ‘white fella’ in local dialect.

The sightings take place when the whales migrate from Antarctica to the northern warmer waters during July-September. You could be lucky enough to grab a rare sighting of this beautiful white whale on our Australia tour holidays that visit Queensland.

Migaloo was believed to be the only white Humpback whale up until June 2011 when the younger, mini me version appeared, dubbed Son of Migaloo and Migaloo Junior, whale watchers all over the world were overjoyed by the news. Hopes are high that Migaloo Junior will live the average lifespan of 50 years or more and bring visitors delights for many years to come.

After much speculation, experts have confirmed that this recent whale sighting is highly unlikely to be Migaloo due to its smaller size and slightly whiter pigmentation. Although there is a little disappointment of this sighting not being the famous Migaloo, many people are delighted that this younger whale has been spotted again, still healthy and thriving.

  • The organisation and communication were first class. The flexibility in travelling to the destination was impressive and the hotels where we stayed  in were all of a good standard. Our Coach was driven by Ken, who was a character and nothing was too much for him.

  • We both enjoyed the Magnificent New Zealand holiday immensely. The Coach Driver/Tour Guide was excellent and the hotels were really comfortable. The holiday was extremely good value and I would recommend it to anyone waning to taste the Antipodean holiday experience.
