New Zealand is a land of unique beauty and distinctive landscapes, whose two main islands offer sub-tropical rainforest and unspoilt beaches, ancient volcanoes and geothermal geysers, rolling pastoral scenery, rugged mountain ranges and fathomless fiords.

Distant Journeys’ Rail, Road & Sea tour includes both North and South Islands and features three wonderfully scenic rail journeys. Travel on one of the world’s great rail journeys from Greymouth to Christchurch via the Southern Alps, on board the TranzAlpine; journey from Christchurch to Picton as we board KiwiRail’s Coastal Pacific, and finally we enjoy the Northern Explorer from Wellington to Otorohanga, through the Tongariro National Park.

Each rail journey offers stunning scenery at every turn, so sit back, relax and take in New Zealand’s magnificent landscapes from the comfort of your seat on this fabulous touring holiday.

    a train on a bridge Platinum Trusted Service Award 2025 - Badge - 1x1

Everything about this trip was wonderful, the coach, the guide, the itinery, the hotels and food. The country, people and scenery were outstanding. Cannot praise my time away enough, wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

    Martin Goodrick

New Zealand by Rail, Road and Sea

We had the most amazing time on this tour which we highly recommend. We got to see all that the North & South Islands have to offer and both were spectacular. Distant Journeys were superb in arranging everything and our Tour Manager (Saul James) lifted an already incredible holiday to another level - he was so organised, thoughtful, informative and had a great sense of humour. If you want to see New Zealand this is the perfect way to do so.
