Travelling to Lantau Island, enjoy a visit to the lofty Ngong Ping plateau. Aboard a sturdy bi-cable car from Tung Chung, ascend over the tree-covered hillside towards Ngong Ping village. Rising higher, the 360-degree views broaden towards the distant horizon, giving a panoramic perspective on the landscape unfolding below. At the top, Ngong Ping Piazza opens out – a peaceful space amid the clouds, intricately designed to emulate an old-fashioned open-air market. Sitting at the heart of the plateau is the Po Lin Monastery, where you can learn about the dedication and daily lives of the monks who built this sacred site, legend has it, with their bare hands. One final determined climb, and we reach the giant bronze Tian Tan Buddha looking out on some of the most magnificent views in Hong Kong. A hearty vegetarian lunch is served in the monastery dining hall, along with a few moments of quiet reflection, before we make our way back down to the modern town of Tung Ching for a spot of shopping.
