The grandeur of Skippers Canyon is one of New Zealand’s best kept secrets.

Located in Queenstown’s backcountry, this spectacular canyon, carved out by the mighty Shotover River, winds sinuously alongside this breath-taking gorge. View the dramatic landscapes and learn about the region’s history and famous gold rush on this exciting ½ day tour.

Once known as ‘the richest river in the world’ due to its gold deposits, the Shotover River drew miners to the Skippers Canyon area during the 1860’s Gold Rush. The historic road built between 1883 and 1890, was considered an engineering feat in its day. One of the highlights of the day is the crossing of Skippers Canyon Bridge. 100m long and suspended 90m above the Shotover River by its original 14 wire ropes, it is a spectacular, not to be forgotten experience.

This half day tour includes several photo stops, an informative commentary by knowledgeable guides. We travel up to Skippers Canyon in comfortable 4WD minibus, with panoramic windows to take in the spectacular and dramatic scenery, and at Skippers Township we visit the fascinating museum before enjoying our picnic amid the grandeur of Skippers Canyon.
