Shimla holiday extension from £745pp
Shimla was known as the ‘Queen of the Hills’ and was the summer capital during British rule in India. Surrounded by steep forested hills falling away on all sides, and with snow-covered mountains as a backdrop, it is little wonder Shimla exerted such a magnetic influence and blossomed into a thriving British hill station.
This holiday extension is available to add to the end of our Golden Triangle & Ranthambore tour.
With spectacular views of steep forested hills and the lower Himalayas, Shimla offers once in a lifetime memories. The journey up to Shimla is breathtaking on the UNESCO ‘Toy Train’ for this historic journey, then see many landmarks and reminders of British colonial life.
This itinerary follows on from Day 11 of our Golden Triangle & Ranthambore tour.
An early start this morning, as we bid farewell to our fellow travelling companions and begin our journey to Shimila. At the train station, we board the Shatabdi Express train for our wonderful journey north to Kalka. Our comfortable ‘chair-class’ seats are in air-conditioned carriages with large viewing windows. On arrival in Kalka, we switch to the Himalayan ‘Toy Train’, an historic rail journey on a narrow gauge railway. Carriages on the Toy Train are small and are not air-conditioned, but this is more than compensated by the increasingly spectacular views across the lower Himalayas. On arrival into Shimla, we transfer to the fabulous Oberoi Cecil Hotel, where we will stay for the next three nights.
Included meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
The best way to explore Shimla’s most important sights and landmarks is on foot, and we discover the many reminders of British colonial life on this morning’s walking tour including arguably Shimla’s most impressive building – Viceregal Lodge.
Included meals: Breakfast and dinner
A Freedom Day in Shimla to relax or further explore this wonderful town at your leisure. Alternatively, you may wish to take a walking tour and join ‘The Sleeping Beauty Trail’, to learn more about how Shimla has evolved over the years.
Included meals: Breakfast and dinner included
Following breakfast, we transfer by road to Chandigarh, where we board our train to Delhi. We transfer to the Pride Plaza Hotel Aerocity, for our final night in India.
Included meals: Breakfast, packed lunch and dinner
Our Indian adventure comes to a close. Our flight departs this morning, arriving in the UK this evening.
Included meals: Breakfast and in-flight meals and drinks
