Discover ancient temples, meet the local wildlife and explore the countryside of inland Bali with this half-day Mengwi Temple, Monkey Forest and Tanah Lot tour. It’s one of several optional excursions we have to offer our travellers who choose to extend the adventure of their escorted tours by taking a homebound stopover in Bali.

From outside your hotel, a comfortable and air-conditioned minivan will pick you up and drive you into Bali’s countryside. Our first stop, before reaching the Mengwi Temple, is a short stop at a series of terraced rice paddies, where your local guide will tell you about the extraordinary farming methods that helped to create these picturesque rice fields. We then drive on before making another stop in the pretty little village of Gulingan. Your guide will show you some of the many colourful and impressive plants found in the village and the surrounding area, before visiting a traditional Indonesian pavilion. Here you can enjoy a light snack of tasty fried sweet potato and tapioca, cooked in a traditional Balinese style, as well as a refreshing drink, before setting off for the Royal Temple of Mengwi.

The Royal Temple of Mengwi, also known as Pura Taman Ayun, dates back to 1634, and boasts incredibly intricate architecture and design. Walk around the courtyard and complex to admire its many pavilions, sacred shrines, carefully carved wooden gates and protective moats. Your tour guide will also take you through the history of the temple and how this spectacle was built.

Your next stop is the sacred Monkey Forest, a must for anyone visiting Bali. Up in the towering trees, clusters of hundreds of mischievous monkeys swing from tree to tree. Wildlife lovers will adore being surrounded by native monkeys and watching them interact with each other – some of them may even come down to say hello!

Finally, we visit Tanah Lot, also known as the Sunset Temple due to the beauty of its sunsets. Set just offshore from Bali on its own small island, Tanah Lot is a beautiful rock formation with an ancient Hindu shrine perched atop of it. Surrounded by the ocean, and reached by a causeway leading you 300 metres out into the sea, a Tanah Lot tour is one of the most romantic things you can do in Bali. Marvel at the 16th century temple atop Tanah Lot, as well as its magnificent silhouette against the ocean backdrop.

After an excellent tour taking in some of the most beautiful sights in all of Bali, your minivan will transport you back to your hotel for your convenience.
