Highlights:

  • View Mount Tarawera from the sky
  • Access to some of North Islands hidden gems

Visit Rotorua’s most remote destinations by your choice of either helicopter, fixed wing aircraft or even floatplane. Popular flightseeing options include exploring New Zealand’s Mount Tarawera which is the site of the largest eruption in New Zealand’s living memory. This volcano is best viewed from the air and there are a number of tours that combine flying over this iconic landmark with landings at destinations including Hells Gate; “the hottest geothermal reserve” or visit the buried village “Te Wairoa” a surviving example of the destruction caused during the 1886 Tarawera eruption.

Alternatively, travel south to discover the hidden valley of Orakei Korako. The stunning scenery and geothermal activity on the very edge of the mighty Waikato River is unlike anywhere else in the world.

Other flight options included aerial views of the lakes district and vibrant geothermal reserves including Waimangu and Wai-O-Tapu. This region is unique and the diversity of the landscape is quite remarkable. Distant Journeys recommends discussing the various options with your Tour Manager when you reach Rotorua who will be happy to help you choose.
