Customer reviews
4.9/5

We saw and learnt a great deal about Japan. Mount Fuji was a delight in the sun with the first snowfall. The golden Pavilion is amazing and decorating your own chopsticks with gold leaf is a must. Most of the tourists are Japanese. Rules are very strictly adhered to especially when crossing roads. Hotels vary but are usually good. Be aware that some towns are small so restaurants are often fully booked as are the hotel restaurants. Hotel bars can close at 17.00 or not open till 20.30. Real Japanese food is not always to a western taste but must be sampled. French Chinese and Italian food is often available. The gardens are wonderful, very serene and a photo opportunity wherever you look. Shrines and temples are not tranquil as they are heaving with people but worth seeing, especially the biggest wooden building in the world at Nara with the giant Buddha and deer who bow for food. It is a very different experience from other Asian countries and well worth a visit

Very Best of Japan
A First-Class Journey Through Japan with Distant Journeys Our holiday to Japan with Distant Journeys was truly first class. From the initial contact through to the end of the tour, everything was well organised and met our expectations. We chose a direct flight from Heathrow to Tokyo, a long 14-hour journey, but it suited us well. Upon arrival, we were met promptly and transferred to our hotel, setting the tone for a smooth experience. Throughout the tour, we stayed in a range of mostly 4-star hotels, which were generally satisfactory. While Japanese hotel rooms tend to be smaller than those back home, they were perfectly adequate for our needs. Breakfast was included at every hotel, offering a mix of Japanese and European options, a thoughtful touch that catered to all tastes. Our tour manager and local guides were exceptionally knowledgeable and quickly built a strong rapport with the group. The itinerary was comprehensive, covering iconic destinations such as Tokyo, Lake Yamanaka, Mount Fuji, Takayama, Kanazawa, Kyoto, Fushimi Inari Shrine, Hiroshima, Miyajima, and Osaka to name just a few. We had ample time to explore and appreciated the balance of guided activities and free time. One point to note, the coach would drop us off on the outskirts of attractions, requiring a 10 to 15-minute walk. While manageable for most, this could be challenging for slower walkers or those with mobility concerns. Thankfully, our tour manager was attentive and made adjustments where possible, but it’s something to consider when booking. In summary, this was a well-executed tour led by experienced professionals. It was our fourth holiday with Distant Journeys with the fifth already booked for February which speaks volumes about our trust in the company. We wholeheartedly recommend the Very Best of Japan tour to others seeking a memorable and enriching travel experience.
