- Behind-the-scenes visit to a Kutani pottery studio
- Discover the elegance of Kaga Yuzen dyeing
- Hands-on creative experience
Kanazawa’s artistic heritage comes to life on this engaging afternoon visit to two of the city’s most celebrated traditional crafts. Long admired for its refined craftsmanship, Kanazawa remains a place where centuries-old techniques are still practised with care and pride.
Begin with a visit to a working studio specialising in Kutani pottery, a distinctive local porcelain tradition dating back to 1655. Step inside the workshop to observe the production process, from shaping the clay and firing, to glazing and the final stage of intricate overglaze painting. The bold colours and striking designs for which Kutani ware is renowned are revealed up close, with time to browse souvenirs.
Continue to the Kaga Yuzen Kimono Centre, where the elegant art of Kaga Yuzen dyeing has been preserved for over 500 years. Defined by five classic colours and nature-inspired designs, each kimono is still dyed entirely by hand. Learn about the techniques, admire beautifully displayed examples, and enjoy the opportunity to dye a handkerchief yourself — a fitting hands-on finale to an afternoon celebrating Japanese artistry.
