Ranthambore Fort, perched atop a hill within Ranthambore National Park, offers breathtaking views over the surrounding forest and wildlife reserve. Once a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Jaipur, the fort was strategically built to defend Rajput territory from foreign invaders. Constructed in the 8th century by a Chauhan ruler, the fort stretches across seven kilometres, with imposing stone walls and a well-planned layout that posed a formidable challenge to attackers.
Visitors can explore the fort’s two distinct sections. The western side is home to religious sites, including temples and mosques, with the Ganesh Temple being the main attraction for devotees. The eastern side opens into a vast area where wildlife such as leopards, fishing cats, and a variety of bird species can often be spotted. Though parts of the surrounding forest were affected by historic conflicts, much of the fort’s grandeur remains, with numerous buildings still standing tall. Exploring the fort requires climbing approximately 250 steps, offering both a physical challenge and a journey through centuries of history.
