Today we explore Udawattakele, a former royal pleasure garden in Kandy that has become an abundant, biodiverse rainforest and birdwaters paradise. Accompanied by an experienced guide, we walk through the forest and learn about the flora and fauna surrounding us.
The forest is home to over 460 plant species, including Mahogany, Peru Balsam, and Devil’s Ivy (Ceylon Creeper). Keen birdwatchers can spot species from both wet and dry zones, such as Layard’s Parakeet, Yellow-fronted Barbet, Crimson-backed Flameback, Little Cormorant, White-bellied Sea Eagle, Common Kingfisher, and Yellow-browed Bulbul.
