Yangshuo

Overview

Highlights:

  • Learn to prepare Chinese cuisine
  • Visit local markets and find the fresh ingredients
  • Enjoy a delicious home made meal

Chinese cuisine has long captured the hearts—and appetites—of people around the world, but nothing compares to learning its secrets right at the source. This hands-on Chinese cooking class in Yangshuo is the perfect optional experience for food lovers joining our China tours. Set in one of China’s most picturesque towns, the class offers an inspiring introduction to regional flavours, especially the distinct tastes of Guangxi cuisine.

You can choose between a morning or an afternoon session. After being collected from your hotel, your experience begins with a guided visit to a local market. In a small group, you’ll explore stalls brimming with fresh produce, spices and seasonal ingredients, many unique to Chinese cooking. Your guide will explain how these ingredients are used in everyday dishes and the role they play within China’s diverse culinary traditions.

With your market discoveries in hand, you’ll head to the cookery school for the main event. Under the guidance of an experienced local chef, you’ll learn traditional cooking methods passed down through generations. After a demonstration, you’ll prepare and cook your chosen dishes in an authentic Chinese-style kitchen, with plenty of support and tips along the way. The recipes are designed to be simple, approachable and suitable for all skill levels—ideal whether you’re a confident cook or a complete beginner.

Once the cooking is complete, you can sit down with your fellow participants to enjoy the meal you’ve created. The menu varies with the seasons and available ingredients, but you can expect dishes such as fresh fish, handmade dumplings and fragrant stir-fried vegetables. As you eat, your chef and guide will share more stories and insights into local customs, culinary traditions and regional folklore.

By the end of your session, you’ll leave fully satisfied—not just from the delicious food, but with a deeper appreciation of Chinese cuisine and new skills you can proudly take home and recreate in your own kitchen.
