Highlights:

  • Admire the highlights of the show, including Face Changing, Long Sleeve Fluttering, Rolling Light, Fire Spitting

Immerse yourself in one of China’s most captivating cultural traditions with an evening of Sichuan opera, or Chuan Ju. This vibrant and beloved art form has flourished since the late Ming and early Qing dynasties. Over time, travelling troupes brought new stories, melodies and performance styles into Sichuan, where they blended seamlessly with the local dialect, customs, folk music and dance.

This is an art form renowned for its colour, humour and remarkable stagecraft. One of its most iconic techniques, face-changing, is rooted in ancient practice. Long ago, people painted their faces to ward off wild animals. Sichuan opera transformed this idea into a breathtaking theatrical skill. As performers twirl and sweep across the stage in traditional costumes, they tilt their heads or shift their bodies for the briefest moment, and an entirely new painted mask appears as if by magic. Many of the stories are drawn from classical Chinese novels, ancient myths, legends and folk tales. With a repertoire that numbers more than 2,000 plays, the variety is extraordinary.

The best place to experience this tradition is Shufengyayun Sichuan Opera House, located within Chengdu Culture Park on Qintai Road. Here, you can settle into an atmospheric theatre that celebrates local arts with traditional performances, unique talent showcases, displays of opera costumes and exhibitions of exquisite handicrafts. It is an ideal setting to enjoy Sichuan’s cultural brilliance and an evening that promises vivid artistry and lively storytelling.
