Bamboo rafting on the Li River

Yangshuo

Overview

Highlights:

  • Experience a unique mode of transport along the Yulong River
  • Admire the beauty of the peaceful countryside
  • Glide past sleepy villages along the riverbank

Drift gently along the emerald waters of the Yulong River, the largest branch of the magnificent Li River, on a serene bamboo raft cruise—one of the most relaxing and memorable ways to experience Yangshuo’s stunning landscapes. Often called the Little Li River for its equally captivating scenery, the Yulong winds through lush countryside, charming villages and dramatic limestone karst peaks.

The journey takes you between Shuierdi pier and Gongnong Bridge, just outside downtown Yangshuo. For more than a thousand years, locals have crafted and navigated bamboo rafts along these waters, prized for their buoyancy and suitability to the river’s narrow, shallow channels. Today, traditional bamboo rafts are still used by local fishermen and for sightseeing, so as you float along, you may spot the fishermen at work, gracefully tending their nets and navigating the river with skill honed over generations.

Guided by an experienced gondolier, your raft glides quietly along the calm waters, allowing you to take in the scenery at leisure. The view is like a painting: emerald riverbanks framed by towering karst mountains, ancient stone bridges arching over the water, and sleepy villages dotted along the shoreline. The reflections in the still river amplify the beauty, creating moments that are nothing short of magical—and perfect for photographs. Along the way, you’ll also pass several of the 28 barrages, low dams that regulate the river’s depth and flow, quietly blending engineering with nature.

For a truly immersive experience, this bamboo raft cruise can be paired with a cycling tour of the Yangshuo countryside. Venturing further afield on two wheels allows you to explore hidden villages and scenic spots only accessible by bike, complementing the gentle pace of the river. Together, the cycling and bamboo rafting offer an ideal combination for experiencing the very best of Yangshuo’s natural and cultural charm.
