Arequipa is famous for its buildings made from ashlar, a bright white volcanic stone, mined from the quarries to the north of the city. Because of its elegant stonework, and unique use of this material, Arequipa has a distinctive look and charm, often referred to as "The White City”, it is a symbol of local craftsmanship and history. Take a half-day trip to explore the quarries of Añashuayco and Quebrada de Culebrillas, where the white raw materials are obtained. Learn about the ancient processes and instruments used to extract, cut, and carve the volcanic ashlar stone and see expert quarry artisans at work.
