About the Houseboat
A kettuvallam is a traditional houseboat widely used throughout Kerala. With their distinctive thatched roofs and wooden hulls, these houseboats are a familiar sight on the rustic Keralan backwaters, a network of tranquil canals and lagoons.
While the houseboats are designed using traditional methods, the interiors are modern with air-conditioning, en suite bathrooms and comfortable furnishings. Life on board a houseboat is the ultimate in relaxation; the boat slowly plies its way along the calm, glistening backwaters, passing through sleepy villages whose friendly, hospitable local people will welcome you with a smile.
Retreat from the heat of the day in your air-conditioned bedroom, or head out to the deck with a cold drink to relax on a cushion with the sounds of birdlife and the scent of spices in the evening air.
Dining Options
Kerala is a gastronomic heaven for both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. The dining experience on board the Spice Route Houseboats is one of the most memorable and enjoyable parts of the whole trip. Fresh fish is brought from local vendors along the canals, and the vegetables and fruits that you find on your plate are either grown on the farm itself or sourced from the local villages.
Breakfast is a combination of continental favourites, bread, eggs and fruit, along with some Keralan specialities such as appam (a type of flatbread) and stew, idlis and dosa served with chutneys and sambar. Lunch is served on a large banana leaf with helpings of vegetables, curry, rice and chutneys. Eat like the locals and dig in with your hands! There are two non-vegetarian and 2 vegetarian main dishes for both lunch and dinner along with breads, rice and condiments.
