The Grand Hotel has a rich history characterised by its striking architecture, very fitting for the hotel’s location in this area known as ‘Little England’. Sitting amongst lush hills in the heart of the Nuwara Eliya, the property started life in 1827 as Barnes Hall, built by the then Governor, Sir Edward Barnes, who established the formal gardens that surround it today. Becoming a hotel in 1891, it has been a beacon of hospitality ever since, renowned for its welcoming service. Enter the grand lobby and be transported to a bygone era.

Spacious guest rooms are elegantly designed in Edwardian style, with traditional furnishings and polished wooden floors, whilst providing modern conveniences such as tea and coffee facilities, a mini fridge and in-room safe. Large windows provide plenty of light and views onto the beautiful grounds. Marble and tiled bathrooms have baths with shower attachments, complimentary toiletries, and bathrobes and slippers are provided.

The hotel has plentiful public areas to relax in, including a piano lounge with cosy fireplaces for when evenings get cooler, and an atmospheric wood-panelled billiard room where you can also try your hand at snooker. Amongst six dining options are the Grand Thai, the Barnes Restaurant offering Western cuisine, and the Grand Indian, with both indoor seating and an outdoor terrace to enjoy. Indulge in afternoon tea in the Tea Lounge, enjoy a drink in the Grand Bar, or sip on a cocktail in the refined ambience of the Library.
