Sanju Sangendo Hall and Paper Fan Painting Experience

Kyoto

Overview

Pre-booking required

Highlights:

  • Sanju Sangendo
  • Ancient Japanese art of paper fan painting

Our afternoon tour begins with a visit to Sanju Sangendo, a temple in eastern Kyoto founded in 1164 and famed for its 1001 statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy.

After visiting the hall, we move on to a craft shop and learn about the ancient Japanese art of paper fan painting. Sensu, or folding fans, are a beautiful, instantly recognisable symbol of traditional Japan. They were originally made from bamboo covered with Japanese washi paper, but are now typically made of paper, sandalwood, or silk. Sensu fans make great gifts, as they’re compact, beautiful and practical.

After learning all about the history and traditions of the painted fans, we will have the opportunity to design and paint our own Sensu.
