Overview
Highlights:
- Explore Bako's unique ecosystems, jungles and beaches
- Opportunity to spot proboscis monkeys and other native wildlife
- Get off grid with an adventure into this remote national park
North of Kuching, where the coastline gives way to dense rainforest and rocky headlands, lies Bako National Park - the oldest national park in Sarawak and accessible only by boat. This remarkable peninsula is home to seven distinct rainforest ecosystems, creating an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna, along with a striking coastline of mangroves, beaches and unusual rock formations.
Bako is celebrated for its extraordinary wildlife, with an impressive range of endemic species, from proboscis monkeys, around 275 of which live here, to silver langurs, long-tailed macaques and wild boar that often stroll through the forest fringe. Sharp eyes may spot flying squirrels gliding between the trees, or monitor lizards basking along shaded paths, while vibrant birdlife brings the canopy above further to life. For keen walkers, a network of well-marked trails weave through the jungle, opening out onto secluded beaches.
