Uzbekistan

Introduction

Explore the lesser-known heart of Uzbekistan with our holiday extension to the fertile Fergana Valley, a hidden gem offering a striking contrast to the country’s desert plains, while revealing a different side of its Silk Road heritage.

Often described as the country’s ‘breadbasket’ and renowned for its rich soil and abundant orchards, the region supplies much of Uzbekistan’s fruit and vegetables and remains a stronghold of traditional local culture. Dotted with historic Silk Road sites and famed for its silk weaving and ceramics, the Fergana Valley reveals an authentic, living landscape of craftsmanship shaped by centuries of trade, artistry and community.

Itinerary

Day 1: Margilan & Kokand, 2 nights

Early this morning, we bid farewell to our travelling companions as they depart for the airport, and transfer to the train station for our onward journey to Margilan, gateway to the Fergana Valley. On arrival, we enjoy a late lunch before exploring this historic town, long associated with Silk Road trade and renowned for its silk production. Considered the birthplace of Uzbek ikat – a vibrant, handmade textile known for its distinctive blurred patterns – Margilan is home to one of Central Asia’s most complex textile traditions, with origins stretching back over 1,000 years. A visit to the Yodgorlik Silk Factory reveals traditional hand-weaving and dyeing techniques still practised today, offering a fascinating insight into a craft that has endured since the 11th century. Later, we continue by road to Kokand, once an important political and religious centre of the region. On arrival, we check in to the Silk Road Kokand Hotel, where we stay for the next two nights.

We visit the impressive Palace of Khudayar Khan, built in the 19th century for the city’s last ruler, before continuing to the Juma Mosque and the historic Norbutabiy Madrassah, offering insight into Kokand’s religious and educational heritage. This afternoon, we enjoy a more intimate cultural experience with a visit to the family workshop of talented knife maker Khasan Umarov. Continuing a tradition passed down through generations, Khasan creates handcrafted blades using time-honoured techniques. Lunch is shared with his family, providing a warm and authentic insight into local life and craftsmanship.
