Tucked away on Australia’s north coast, Darwin is the capital of the Northern Territory and the largest city around for hundreds of miles. It’s also the gateway to some of both the most beautiful coastline and wetlands in Australia. The wetlands surrounding the Adelaide River 70km outside of Darwin offer some of the most stunning landscapes in Australia, as well as a wealth of fascinating wildlife species. Enjoy the ultimate Darwin wetland experience with our day tour offered as an extra on our tours of Australia, featuring a scenic 2.5-hour wetlands cruise.

There’s no need to find your own way out of the city as transport is included, collecting you directly from your accommodation in Darwin. With your adventure underway, your knowledgeable tour guide will give an interesting commentary as you travel out of the city and towards the first stop of the day: the Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve.

The Fogg Dam reserve offers your first opportunity to see Darwin’s panoramic wetlands up close. Follow the boardwalks around the reserve to see the wetlands from different observation platforms, from where a large number of resident wading birds can be seen. Be sure to get a picture from the Pandanus Lookout, which has excellent views over the Fogg Dam itself. There are also gentle gradient footpaths where you can walk between shaded forests and floodplain areas.

After getting to know the wetlands at the Fogg Dam nature reserve, your next stop is the Window on the Wetlands information centre. Perched atop Beatrice Hill, it’s in a brilliant location overlooking the Adelaide River floodplains. These floodplains are ones of stark contrasts: flooded for one half of the year, and baked and dried out for the other half. From the top viewing deck, soak up the 270-degree views of the wetlands, before learning all about the wetlands’ plants, ecology, climate and more through the range of interactive displays.

It’s then time for the highlight of the tour: the 2.5-hour wetlands lunch cruise. Watch the scenery of the tranquil wetland pass by as you look out for a diverse array of wildlife pointed out to you by your guide, including an abundance of birds and even crocodiles, as well as beautiful flowers, trees and plants. As you gently float along on your wetlands cruise, you’ll also get to tuck into a delicious lunch on board with the spectacular wetland scenery all around you.

Following an unforgettable lunch cruise on Darwin’s wonderful wetlands, you’ll be transported back to your hotel in Darwin, free to enjoy the rest of your evening in the city. Please note this tour operates from May to October only.
