Surge in Wellington tourism

Surge in Wellington tourism

Wellington is currently experiencing a five year high in visitor numbers, with this figure expected to continue on the current path of growth.

Statistics New Zealand released figures showing the number of nights spent by guests to the area, with “guest nights” in Wellington having increased during December 2014 by 2.7 per cent when compared with December of 2013.Wellington New Zealand increase in tourism | New Zealand holidays 2015 tourism nature beautiful | Distant Journeys

Wellington experienced over 26,000 more people staying in the city during November and December, which itself is a rise of 7.3 per cent on the previous year.

The chief of Wellington Tourism has said events such as Nitro Circus live and the Four Nations Rugby League Grand Final have helped tourism within New Zealand as a whole, with a quarter of the sales of these tickets coming from people living outside of New Zealand.

Nationally, New Zealand accommodation statistics were at an increase of 7.1 percent, and International visitor statistics have increased by 9.5 per cent on previous years.

It is believed that these figures will continue to rise with the Cricket World Cup Finals currently underway within the nation, with New Zealand’s opening game against Sri Lanka being all but sold out; a proportion of these tickets being to external patrons.

Total holiday arrivals for the year 2014 were up 6.9 per cent on the previous year, which rounded off a very good year for growth within the nation.

  • The organisation and communication were first class. The flexibility in travelling to the destination was impressive and the hotels where we stayed  in were all of a good standard. Our Coach was driven by Ken, who was a character and nothing was too much for him.

  • We both enjoyed the Magnificent New Zealand holiday immensely. The Coach Driver/Tour Guide was excellent and the hotels were really comfortable. The holiday was extremely good value and I would recommend it to anyone waning to taste the Antipodean holiday experience.
